Course Description: (1 Hour) 

In this quick and lively tour of the APA’s current guidelines for practice with boys and men, Kirsten Bradbury and Greg Hixon update you on ways to better meet the needs of this extensively underserved patient population.

This course is appropriate for psychologists and other mental health professionals of all levels of professional experience. The Clinician & The Statistician: APA Guidelines for Practice with Men and Boys also provides one hour of credit toward the continuing cultural competency requirement for Licensed Psychologists in Texas.


Learning Objectives: 

  1. Define traditional masculinity, role strain, and the effects of male privilege on boys and men.
  2. Name at least three specific ways clinicians can improve their practices with boys and men.
  3. Correctly interpret population statistics that may contribute to gender stereotypes about men.
  4. Identify the special needs of male clients to improve service to this underserved population.

Course Instructors:

Following work as a visiting professor for Mercer University, Dr. Bradbury came to UT Austin in 2007 as a lecturer where she has received numerous awards for her teaching, including the President’s Associates Award and the Regents’ Award for Outstanding Teaching. Dr. Bradbury, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, maintains an active independent clinical practice, providing assessment, therapy, and consultation services to a wide range of individual and institutional clients. Her specialties include applications of cognitive-behavioral therapy, positive psychology, and motivational science to complex mental health situations involving medical, family, business, and legal systems. She hosts a variety of clinical workshops and wellness presentations for professional groups, student organizations, and general audiences of all ages. An expert in self-care as a behavioral health concept, Dr. Bradbury tries to practice what she preaches when it comes to maintaining work/life balance. Click here to learn more about Dr. Bradbury.

Dr. Greg Hixon received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991, concentrating in social psychology with a specialization (M.S. equivalent) in statistics.. After serving on the faculty at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Hixon went on to work with several governmental agencies, culminating in his service as Director of Quantitative Analysis for the Texas Department of Human Services from 1999-2003 and then as Senior Research Analyst for the Texas Legislative Council from early 2003 until he returned to the University of Texas in 2004. Dr. Hixon currently teaches four Ph.D.-level classes in statistical analysis at the University of Texas covering everything from basic approaches like analysis of variance and linear regression to advanced techniques like multivariate non-parametric modeling, simulation methods, structural equations, and more. Dr. Hixon's  research focuses on nonlinear dynamic analysis systems, with primary applications in the investment and financial markets. Psychologists: Texas Psychology Continuing Education (TPCE) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists in the United States and Canada. TPCE maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Completion of the course(s) with a post-test score of 75% or better is required to receive continuing education credit; there is no partial credit.
